Panglima Melayu

PANGLIMA AWANG KEBANGGAAN KU

During I was in Form 5, my history teacher Mrs Anidah was teaching about the great sail around the world done by Ferdinand de Magellan. As we all know, Ferdinand de Magellan did not finished the adventure as he died in Phillipine and he was place by his assistant but the text book did not explain bout it. But my teacher did told us about the assistant name. He was called Hitam or Black and he is a Malay.

Yesterday at Carrefour, I was in a bookstore where I catch a glimpse on a newspaper called Berita Harian which imposed a topic, Panglima Awang Keliling Dunia. Huh? My mind flashback all the thing that Mrs Anidah told us…So I grab RM2 and paid for the paper. I quickly read bout it and I was shock to find out that my race is not that bad after all…they are a good sailor and the help to the Spanish to gain name being the first one to sail around the world.

Eventhough we can’t find the history in Sejarah Melayu by Tun Sri Lanang, but this Panglima Awang name is stated in many manuscript from overseas. Example will be from the Figafetta scripture. Panglima Awang also known as Enrique, Henry the Black, Henrich, Ariberto Espinosa and many more.

As a Malay, I am proud to know this kind of history and appreciate it more than the Legend of Hang Tuah. Well this history is suppose to be more accredited compare to Hang Tuah because it is acknowledge Malay and shows that Malay is not a just an inferior race which could be dump to the garbage. Furthermore the truthness of Hang Tuah can be doubted and Sejarah Melayu was writen years after period of Hang Tuah. Basically this shoes that Malay did well in the past and will do the same now and in the future.

Unfortunately we, Malay, can only gained our fame back by returning to the Islam because our dynasty reach its peak due to Islam. I remember a hadis said that Rasulullah s.a.w said if you held tight to the kalimah of Lailahailallah, you will be given the power to govern the Arabs and the Ajam (non-Arab).

Lastly I have to take the sweet words from Hang Tuah, TAKKAN MELAYU HILANG DI DUNIA…

P/s: I will put the full story in some other time.

Sdr,

Panglima Awang was a very high ranking official in the Malacca sultanate. At the same time he was also a Portuguese collaborator. He had never been a slave throughout his life except for being the subject of the Malacca Sultan to whom Panglima Awang had served loyally. Panglima Awang changed his allegiance to Alfonso de Albuqueque and thus become another King of Portugal's subject on 16 July 1511. Panglima Awang fought on Portugal's side and eventually helped Alfonso de Albuquerque capture Malacca in late August 1511.
